Images/photos are protected by copyright and this also applies to images that can be perceived as "simple". An image therefore does not have to be "artistic" to be protected by copyright. Keep in mind that just because an image is published on the internet or otherwise available, it does not mean that you have the right to use it without permission. Most often it is the photographer, but it can also be someone else who owns the rights to it.
