Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging means that companies placing packaged products on the market are responsible for financing the collection and recycling of that packaging when it becomes waste. This typically applies to companies that import products with packaging, manufacture or fill packaging, or sell packaged products in a specific country.
To comply with Packaging EPR requirements, companies usually need to register with the relevant national authority in each country where they sell packaged products. They must also report the amount of packaging they place on the market, usually divided by material type such as plastic, paper, metal, or glass. In addition, companies must pay EPR fees that support national recycling and waste management systems. In most cases, businesses also need to join a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO), which manages collection, recycling, and reporting on behalf of producers.
